Is Toyota Being Vilified?

Is it just me or is Toyota being unfairly lambasted over the alleged defects in their cars? The American media has been all over this topic and the government has held Toyota to a seemingly double-standard.
Afterall, where are the bold headlines about GM's latest recall? 1.3 million cars recalled for alleged power steering problems!

I love America. However, I think when a government gets into bed with a major private enterprise like the Americans did with GM, it's going to create big conflicts of interest. The US Government actually owns a stake in General Motors now. It kind of makes you wonder what their agenda is when they roast Toyota like they have in the last 8 weeks. In my humble view, the roasting has been a little over the top.
