Jonas Brothers - A Symptom Of Our Time

Several blog entries ago, I referred to a growing problem that I see just about everywhere I turn.... there is a loss of fundamentals in our modern society. I gave the example of bankers who couldn't provide me with the formula for compound interest. The mortgage crisis is said to have emerged, because people who should know better were loaning too much money to too many people under circumstances that had no mathematical prospect of working out long-term.
What the heck does this have to do with Jonas Bros.?
Well... I believe the problem of missing fundamentals is everywhere.
I have heard about and seen pictures of the Jonas Bros. for months.... their pretty-boy faces are plastered everywhere. I definitely could have picked them out of a crowd. Yet... YET, I had never heard one of their songs til yesterday.
By contrast, artists like Elvis or the Beatles were HEARD first and then seen afterward. People came to like them for what they actually represented, musical talent.
So, why is the music secondary to good looks now when it comes to modern music? I could see if we were talking about the pursuit of modeling excellence, then good looks obviously plays an important role, but what the heck do good looks have to do with composition? singing talent? instrumental facility? Answer: nothing.
Don't get me wrong. I mean nothing personal against these 3 young guys. Certainly, they are likable enough and perhaps even a bit entertaining. But, musically worthy of all this exposure and fanfare? Worthy of a feature special on Larry King Live by Mr. King himself???
Hardly. Seriously, is Larry King trying to expand his target market to include prepubescent girls now??
General Norman Schwartzkopf once described Saddam Hussein as follows:
"As far as Saddam Hussein being a great military strategist, he is neither a strategist, nor is he schooled in the operational art, nor is he a tactician, nor is he a general, nor is he a soldier. Other than that he's a great military man"
So, here's my view of Jonas Bros:
As far as Jonas Bros being a great musical outfit, they are neither capable of singing on key very well nor are they well-versed in the execution of musical instrumentation, nor are they composers, nor do they even possess musical originality, nor do they appear to have fundamental musical knowledge. Other than that, they are a pretty good band.
